NOTE:   This preliminary list of hospitals is incomplete.  It forms part of a larger study being conducted by Noeline Kyle into midwives and their private hospitals on the north coast of NSW.  Noeline would be pleased to hear from researchers who have information about any of the listed women or hospitals, or any other women not listed who worked as midwives in these towns/areas until  about 1940.  Please contact the email or address/phone below for more information on the midwives/hospitals listed herein:

The North Coast for this study  includes the following towns:

 Armidale/Uralla, Ballina, Alstonville,Broadwater,  Bangalow, Byron Bay, Nimbin, Bellingen, Dorrigo/Guy Fawkes,  Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Casino and surrounding areas,  Coffs Harbour/Urunga,  Kempsey,  Smithtown,  South West Rocks, Port Macquarie, Kyogle and surrounding areas, Lismore and surrounding areas, Macksville, Maclean, Ulmarra, Murwillumbah/Tweed.

 

Hospital’s names:  In some cases the only names I can find for hospitals is a reference that a particular midwife operated a hospital (either lying in or general or both) or a reference to a lying in hospital established by a midwife or doctor or a private hospital (usually medical, surgical and lying in ) established by a midwife or doctor.  Until I can find more information on these hospitals I have listed them under the titles:  Lying In Hospital (midwife or doctor’s name in brackets), or Private Hospital (midwife or doctor’s name in brackets).
